From the Editor's desk....

Dear Readers,

Welcome back to school! Hope all of you had a great winter break! It has been over two months since your new session has begun & some of you are familiar with your school settings but there are many of you who are new to the school. I am sure the old ones will not have much problem in coming back to school while the new students will definitely take time in adjusting to the new environment.

Some of you are moving from Primary School to a Secondary/Senior Secondary school and others from a Middle School to a Secondary/Senior Secondary School. You may be excited and concern about going into Secondary/Senior Secondary Schools while some of you are looking forward to more freedom, more choice and more opportunities to participate in more extra-curricular activities. However, many of you may be "nervous" and "scared" about other students teasing you; getting lost in their larger & unfamiliar school and making bad grades. You are also concerned that Secondary/Senior Secondary teachers will be more strict and the teachers will give you much more and much harder work than you had in Primary or Middle School.

Transition is a very critical period for the early adolescents. As researches have shown that the students who have talked their concerns regarding transition with the teachers, counselors or parents have achieved more, are better adjusted and are less likely to drop out.

On the contrary, studies have revealed that the early adolescens who have not addressed their concerns regarding transition, many drop out shortly after they enter Senior Secondary school or they fall behind and fail to graduate on time. Some of them do not attend school as regularly as they did.

Therefore I would urge the new students to address your concerns with the school authorities, the Teacher Counselors in the school or the Counselors at the Department of Education. The educators will surely assist in making transition from Primary/Middle to Secondary/Senior Secondary smooth for you.

Please seek help!

Wishing you all the best!

Donkar Wangmo (Counselor)

They observe patients and assess and record their symptoms, reactions and progress. In direct patient care, nurses working in a hospital may be assigned to one area such as maternity, paediatrics, or intensive care or rotate among the various departments. At senior levels, nurses may take on supervisory and administrative roles. Nurse midwives take care of pregnant women.

Training and education

Formal training can begin after class X with the 18-month Auxiliary Nurse Midwife or Multi-Purpose Health Worker course. Three-year `Diploma Course in General Nursing' is after 10 plus two or equivalent (usually with science). They may choose to work in a clinic, in a nursing home, a rehabilitation centre, infirmaries of schools, prisons, private agencies, military service and various government settings or even in the home of a patient. Nurses may work in the private practice of physicians or surgeons assisting him or her on a daily basis with patients in the clinic. The entry of the corporate sector in health services and medical tourism in India has enhanced job opportunities for nurses in India.
