CAREER
COUNSELING Nursing, a major health-care occupation, involves caring for the sick and injured. Nurses may help those who are not sick to stay well. They observe patients and assess and record their symptoms, reactions and progress. In direct patient care, nurses working in a hospital may be assigned to one area such as maternity, paediatrics, or intensive care or rotate among the various departments. At senior levels, nurses may take on supervisory and administrative roles. Nurse midwives take care of pregnant women.
Personality attributes
Nursing is suited to people who have social skills, like working with people, possess practical problem-solving skills, good judgment, scientific aptitude, critical thinking skills, to follow instructions and orders, and have common sense.
Training and education
Formal training can begin after class X with the 18-month Auxiliary Nurse Midwife or Multi-Purpose Health Worker course. Three-year `Diploma Course in General Nursing' is after 10 plus two or equivalent (usually with science). Four-year B Sc Nursing course is open to individuals completing plus two in Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Admission is usually through an entrance examination. Two-year B Sc Nursing Post Basic or certificate course is offered after 10 plus two or equivalent in science and Certificate in General Nursing and Midwifery (`A' grade nurse registered by the State Nurses Registration Council) and three years' experience, as a staff nurse in a recognised hospital or in public health nursing field after obtaining the above certificates.
M Sc (Nursing) and doctoral (Ph D) may be pursued after B Sc Nursing or equivalent and M Sc Nursing respectively. Specialisations in cardiological or cardiothoracic and vascular surgeons, oncological, neurosciences, psychiatric, nephrological, critical care and paediatric are possible during M Sc.
Prospects
They may choose to work in a clinic, in a nursing home, a rehabilitation centre, infirmaries of schools, prisons, private agencies, military service and various government settings or even in the home of a patient. Nurses may work in the private practice of physicians or surgeons assisting him or her on a daily basis with patients in the clinic. The entry of the corporate sector in health services and medical tourism in India has enhanced job opportunities for nurses in India.
Applications are invited by the Directorate General of Medical Services (Army) for B Sc Nursing course at College of Nursing AFMC Pune and General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) course at various Armed Forces Hospitals. Selection is through an all-India, objective-type entrance test of 90 minutes' duration in General English, Biology and General Intelligence followed by an interview and medical examination.
The UK is looking at qualified general and mental-health, qualified nurses to work in the National Health Services in the UK (www.nursinguk.nhs.uk). Indian nurses are being recruited for the US too. Of course, in both cases, those recruited would have to complete the formalities of obtaining NMC registration in the UK and the licensing exam for nurses or NCLEX in the US. Nursing, thus, offers an array of exciting career choices everywhere in the world.
