CTSA Chairman visit Tibetan Schools
Shri M.M.Jha Joint Secretary to the Government of India, Department of Education and Ministry of Human Resource and Development and Chairman of Central Tibetan Schools Administration(CTSA), New Delhi undertook an extensive tour of Central School for Tibetans(CST), Herbertpur and CST Mussoorie. The Secretary Shri M.K.Rao of the CTSA, Secretary Tsering Dhundup of the Department of Education (DoE), Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), Dharamsala accompanied the Chairman. During his visits to the schools from July 18th through 20th the Chairman while inquiring about the welfare and education of the children encouraged the students themselves to endeavor and excel in every chosen field. While inspecting the classrooms the Chairman showed a keen interest in the classroom learning methodology and emphasized the significance of active participation of the child. During an evening cultural show at CST Mussoorie he advised the students to preserve their rich cultural heritage and identity.
On the invitation of the Secretary, DoE he also paid visits to CST Paonta Sahib, Tibetan Homes Foundation School at Mussoorie and the crèche at Lakhanwala near Dehradun.
Revised Tibetan textbooks
Tibetan Textbooks for pre-primary, classes I and II which were recently reviewed by "The High Level Review Committee" has been printed and distributed to the schools for the current academic session that is 2000-2001.
English Essay writing and Painting contest
In commemoration of the 60th Anniversary of His Holiness the Dalai Lama's Enthronement at the Potala Palace and the 50th Anniversary of His Assumption of State Responsibility, the DoE conducted an English Essay writing contest for students of classes IX & X and a Painting contest for students of classes V & VI on July 15th simultaneously in all schools. The contests were also arranged to promote creative writing, aesthetic development and painting skills among the students. Mr. Hiro Sukeyasu of Japan who has consented to invite the winners of the essay contest to Japan for a short holiday sponsors the contests.
Fee increment appeal
THE CENTRAL TIBETAN SCHOOLS ADMINISTRATION, NEW DELHI HAS RAISED THE BOARDING FEES OF STUDENTS FROM RUPEES 400/- TO 600/- PER MONTH WITH EFFECT FROM JANUARY 1st THIS YEAR. WITH REFERENCE TO THE SAME, THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION WOULD LIKE TO REQUEST ALL CONCERNED SPONOSRS TO INCREASE THEIR SPONSORSHIP CONTRIBUTION FOR THEIR WARDS FROM US$20 TO US$30 PER MONTH. WE HOPE THAT OUR SPONSORS WILL UNDERSTAND THAT THE INCREASE HAS BEEN EFFECTED AS A RESULT OF RISING INFLAITON.

Alumni honors English teacher
Mr. N.C.Tripathi, Senior English language teacher at CST Mussoorie paid a visit to Dharamsala earlier in June. During his brief visit here, over 38 of his former students turned up for an informal tea gathering arranged in his honor at the DoE where a traditional scarf and a book were also presented to him as a token of gratitude. The alumni consisted of a diverse spectrum of ex students right from those who had graduated high school way back in 1973 holding very senior positions in the departments today to those who had graduated as recently as 1995. Mr. Tripathi exchanged pleasantries with all his former students and inquired about their progress in life as well as their career.
Minister & officials attend CTSA heads & rectors meet
Minister Mrs. Rinchen k. Choegyal; Secretary Mr. Tsering Dhondup; Mr. Tashi N.Rikha, Joint Secretary and education officers of DoE attended the eleventh annual Institutional Heads and Rectors meet held at National Bal Bhawan, New Delhi from 21st to 23rd June. Shri K.S.Sharma, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Human Resource Development Government of India was the chief guest.
Our Education Minister also addressed the meeting on the opening day. In her valedictory address she stressed upon the importance of implementing the targets set for year 2000 during this meeting.
Secretary visit CST Dalhousie
The Secretary Shri M. K. Rao of the CTSA, Mr. Tsering Dhundup, Secretary DoE accompanied by Shri. C.Dharuman, Education Officer, CTSA made a joint inspection of CST Dalhousie from May 16th through 17th. They made extensive inspections of the morning assembly, classrooms, hostels and other activities of the school.
School inspections by STSA & DoE Officers
Mr. Karma Chungdak, Director, Sambhota Tibetan Schools Administration (STSA) at Dharamsala and Mr. Tsering Samdup, Education Officer DoE undertook joint annual academic inspections of CST Chauntra and CST Bir, Pre-primary school of Tashijong from April 15th to 19th. They inspected the morning assemble, classroom teaching along with cultural and other daily activities. The visitors also gave general feed back of the inspection during staffs meeting in the respective schools.
Teacher Trainee evaluation program at CST Chauntra
Ven.Pema Dorjee, Principal, Institute of Buddhist Dialectics, Sarah (IBD) and Mr. Samdup, Education Officer, DoE and Lecturers from IBD were in CST Chauntra and Bir near Dharamsala in the first wee of August.
During their stay there, the officers and lecturers made extensive inspection and evaluation of the teaching competency skills of twenty-five trainee teachers from IBD who were undergoing practical classes.
Internaltional Conference on Tibetan Studies
The ninth seminar of the International Association for Tibetan Studies was hosted by the International Institute for Asian Studies, Leiden University in Amsterdam, The Netherlands from June 24th to 30th.
Head of the publication section of DoE Acharya Karma Monlam participated in the conference and made two presentations viz.1) The future direction of Tibetan language and 2)Panel;Tibetan IT-standardization of software key-map etc. In all, over 330 scholars attended the seminar from 29 countries. The tenth seminar will be held in Italy in the year 2003.
Staff transfers
Mr. Tseten Gyurme, Joint Secretary and Project Officer of the DoE has joined the Department of Finance, CTA on transfer w.e.f. August 1st. Mr. Tenpa Dhargyal, Accounts Officer of DoE has been transferred to the Election Commission, CTA w.e.f. August 18th and Mr. Tsering Thai of the sponsorship section under DoE has left us on transfer to the Department of Security w.e.f. August 1st.
Teacher participates in Folk life Festival in US
The Smithsonian Institute, in collaboration with the conservancy for Tibetan Art and Culture and the Tibetan Government in Exile jointly organized a two-week Folk Life Festival(June 23rd through 27th and June 30th through July 4th) at the National Mall in Washington D.C, USA. Numerous samplings of ancient cultural traditions of Tibet were presented at the festival. This department was represented by Mr. Ngawang Choedak a teacher at CST Bylakuppe in the festival. He gave live demonstration of Tibetan Calligraphy and block printing.

IInd TFAA conference at Norbulingka, Dharamsala
The second conference of the Tibetan Fulbright Alumni Association was held at the Norbulingka Institute on May 18th. Over thirty current and new members attended the meeting. The Minister for religion and cultural affairs Mr. Tashi Wangdi was the chief guest at the opening ceremony. In his address to the gathering he commended the success of the Tibetan Fulbright program and the worthy contributions it has made to the community in exile. The meeting elected a new batch of central coordinating committee members and proposed an action plan for the year 2000.
School Feature:Dekyiling Tibetan School
Located in the scenic Doon Valley, near Mussoorie in northern India, which is famous for its hill resorts, boarding schools and the Indian Military Academy, Dekyiling Tibetan School made a humble beginning in tents as classrooms on July 1st 1982. A few months later, the school moved to a building funded by aid organizations under coordination from the Department of Home under the CTA, Dharamsala.
The DoE took over the school in August 1984. Today, it is a full-fledged day school from kindergarten to grade VIII level with 308 students on roll and 19 full time staff members. Over the years, the school has seen rapid growth in terms of all round academic development.
On the co-curricular front, it has an excellent record having regularly bagged a large number of trophies in the numerous inter-departmental school meets arranged annually.
Since January last, the school has a brand new tow-story building, which has greatly improved the facilities available to the students. Amount the priorities was the introduction of computer science education since October 1999. The school has also added a special resource section for its teachers as well. The assistance and support received from numerous sponsors and organizations have made lasting contribution to the school's all round development.
STSA conducts first School Heads Conference
The first conference of school heads under STSA was held on May 2nd and 3rd, 2000 at Dharamsala. The education Minister presided over the opening ceremony of the conference. She stressed upon the significance of the teacher's role in the all round development of the students in our schools. The education secretary gave the valedictory address.
Kurseong Hostel closed
CST Kurseong has been closed with effect from July 1st 2000 owing to decreasing enrolment. The children have been admitted to nearby schools. Owing to this the hostel which is under the STSA was also closed. Mr. Sonam Tsering who is the Accountant of STSA presided over the closing process.
Tibetan Student top CBSE results in Shimla region
Master Tashi Samdup of CST Shimla topped the CBSE results for Humanities stream among the school sin the Shimla region(capital of Himachal Pradesh State). With 76.8% overall results, he had distinctions in Economics-92, Geography-86 and Tibetan-75 among other subjects. The department congratulates him for the achievement.
Alumni help school
The Ex Dalhousie students Association that was founded in 1992 and based in Nepal with an active membership of over 120 Ex students(1999) donated a sum of Indian Rupees 85,000/-(Eighty five thousand)towards improving the school clinic, hostel and purchasing additional musical instruments and costumes need.

We are thankful to the Danish Children's Fund, Denmark for providing funds towards replacement of old furniture in classrooms for six Tibetan Schools. New desks and other accessories the schools acquired will go a long way towards the improvement of the learning environment in the schools.
We also thank Tania Fierro and her Casa Tibet group in Mexico for their support of a number of Tibetan children, monks and nuns for the past few months. We also appreciate their care and concern for the larger Tibetan cause.
New Hostel at CST Paonta
Construction of a new girl's hostel at CST Paonta has been recently completed. The hostel will accommodate over 300 students, which will greatly relieve the pressure on existing hostels. The DoE and the school wishes to thank our friends in Nippon (Japan) through Mr. Hiro Sukeyasu and Mr. Hirotada Takase for funding this project as they have done for numerous other projects at Paonta school.
New facilities for Pokhraibong
Construction of a new school clinic, library and a multipurpose auditorium at Tibetan School, Pokhriabong has been completed. Mr. Christopher Karl Walter of Massachusetts, USA, has funded the project. We thank him for the generous assistance.
Fund appeal for teacher training program
The DoE has completed preliminary selection of candidates for a two year Montessori/Preprimary Teacher Training program which will commence in September. This is the second time that such a project is being organized. The initial program, which was completed in 1998, was a success as all the trainees in that batch have been employed in numerous Tibetan schools. The DoE wishes to appeal to all our friends to kindly fund this project in part or in its entirely, details and all other relevant information can be availed from us on demand.

AIT scholarship recipient returns
Mr. Tenzin Wangdak who did his Master in Computer Science from the Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok(under scholarship funded by the Finnish government and coordinated in India by this department) has returned to serve in his parent organization viz., the Tibetan Medical and Astrological Institute. Currently, he heads the computer section of the Institute and works as a programmer/analyst primarily dealing with Internet, Client/Serve development technologies.
