CTSA Chairman Visit CTA (TOP)

CTSA Chairman with Prof. S. RinpocheMr. M.M. Jha, Chairman of the Central Tibetan Schools Administration, New Delhi visited Dharamsala on June 7. He had an audience with His Holiness the Dalai Lama at Theckchen Choeling . He then paid a brief visit to the secretariat of the Central Tibetan Administration, Gangchen Kyishong where he met with the Kashag (Council of Ministers). He also visited the Tibetan Children’s Village School and gave a talk to a gathering of educators and students on the topic: Schools in the 21st Century.

13th Annual CTSA Institutional Heads & Rectors Workshop (TOP)

The 13th Annual Meeting-cum-Workshop of Institutional Heads and Rectors of Central Tibetan Schools Administration (CTSA) was held at Central School for Tibetans (CST), Mussoorie from 24th to 30th June. All issues concerning the schools ranging from academics, administration, accounts, construction works to resource management were deliberated at length. The participants presented papers on different topics viz. reasons for this year’s poor examination results, increasing student indiscipline, declining enrolment and on hostel management. Education Secretary Ven. Karma G. Yuthok and Joint Secretary Mr. Tashi N. Rikha attended the first two days of the workshop which was conducted by Dr. M.S. Verma, Secretary CTSA and also attended by education officers of DOE and CTSA. Mr. Wajahat Habibullah, Director, Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration inaugurated the workshop. Miss Nidhi Srivastava, Sub-Divisional Magistrate gave the valedictory address.

3rd meeting of STSA School Heads Held (TOP)

John Mason with STSA School HeadsThe 3rd STSA Heads of School Meeting was held at Sambhota Tibetan School (STS), Dekyiling, from May 1-4. Various issues concerning academic, administration and overall development of the schools were discussed. Mr. John Mason, Headmaster of Doon School at Dehradun, a special invitee, gave a talk on Value Education to the participants and on his invitation, the school heads toured the Doon School campus.

Class X CBSE Results Of Tibetan Schools 2002 (TOP)

The overall pass percentage of this year Class X CBSE result was 60.6%. Out of 1180 students who have appeared 716 students passed the examination. CST Kollegal topped with 100% result followed by CST Paonta Sahib (95.2%), TCV Lower Dharamsala (88.23%), CST Shimla (82.5%). Tenzin Yingdok of TCV Dharamsala secured highest marks with 87.6%.

Tibetan Educators Return from Denmark (TOP)

Mr. Sangpo Rinzin, Headmaster of CST Paonta Sahib and Mrs. Passang Lhamo, Headmistress of STS Shillong returned to India after attending the 20 weeks educational leadership programme at International Peoples College, Denmark. They had wide exposure to cross-cultural democratic and educational leadership experiences. The programme is initiated by Danish Tibetan Cultural Society with funds from the Democracy Fund under the Danish Foreign Ministry.

New Rector Appointed (TOP)

Mr. Tenzin Choklang has been appointed on deputation as the Rector at CST Darjeeling from June 17. Prior to his new appointment, Mr. Choklang served as Headmaster at Tibetan Homes School, Rajpur (Dehradun). He replaces Mr. Tsering Dhondup who has been transferred to CST Dalhousie as Rector from June 1.

STS Bhuntar Inaugurated (TOP)

STS bhuntar view Education Minister, Kalon Thupten Lungrig, formally inaugurated Sambhota Tibetan School at Bhuntar in Himachal Pradesh on July 16. The Education Secretary Ven K.G.Yuthok and Mr. Karma Chungdak, Director, Sambhota Tibetan Schools Administration (STSA), were present on the occasion. The school will function as a residential school with Classes VI onwards primarily to facilitate the children of Classes VI to VIII from CST Manali, which was downgraded to primary level due to constant threat from floods and landslides. They also visited CST Manali and CST Bir and met with the staff, parents and children.

New Classroom Block at Chauntra Inaugurated (TOP)

Music & Dance Teachers The Education Minister inaugurated the newly completed double-storied classroom building at CST Chauntra on July 18. Education Secretary, Additional Secretary Mrs Nangsa Choedon and Director, STSA were present on the occasion. This marks the completion of the school project funded by UNESCO, Paris which includes school hostel, dispensary and staff quarters. The school accommodates about 300 children from poorest families settled in the remote village of Tuting in north eastern India. We are grateful to the donors for their generosity.

Education Minister Visit schools (TOP)

Mr. Thupten Lungrig, Education Minister paid a brief visit to Gangtok and Pokhriabong from June 14-18. He visited the Tibetan schools there and interacted with the students, teachers and with the local Tibetan community. Education Secretary Ven. K.G.Yuthok accompanied the minister during the visit.

Education Secretary Visit CTSA Schools (TOP)

Education Secretary Ven. K.G.Yuthok and Dr. M.S.Verma, Secretary CTSA visited CST Shimla and CST Dholanji in the third week of May and CST Dalhousie in the second week of June. They inspected the school facilities and interacted with staff and students. On 10th and 11th June, they visited CST Dalhousie. Mr. T. N. Rikha, Joint Secretary DOE accompanied them during the visits.

Education Officers Visit CST Kollegal (TOP)

Mr. Tsering Phuntsok, Education Officer DOE and Mr. C. Dharuman, Education Officer CTSA conducted a joint annual inspection of CST Kollegal from June 1-5. They inspected all the classes and educational facilities. Besides interacting with students and staff, they met with the members of the school’s Parent-Teacher Association. It is the largest Tibetan day school having classes from Pre-primary to Class X with an enrolment of over eight hundred students. The school enjoys active support and co-operation from the local community.

New Multi-Purpose Auditorium for TNMF School Completed (TOP)

The construction of a new multi-purpose auditorium funded by the Department of Education, CTA at the Tibetan Nehru Memorial Foundation School Clement town has been completed. Mrs. N. Choedon, Additional Secretary, DOE inaugurated the auditorium on July 6 on the auspicious occasion of the birth anniversary of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

College Admission Guidance for Students (TOP)

DOE Counsellor Mr. Kalsang Tsewang toured Tibetan settlements of Mundgod, Bylakuppe, Hunsur and Kollegal from May 11-30 and met outgoing class XII students. He interviewed the students to discuss their career plans and provided guidance for taking up various college courses based on individual aptitude and present job market situation.

He also visited various colleges in the states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and helped many Tibetan students seek admission in the colleges. The programme was co-ordinated with the Tibetan Chief Representative’s Office in Bangalore. He also able to obtain assurances from some of the colleges for allocation of seats and nominal scholarships for Tibetan students. This has immensely benefited the students while seeking admission for various courses. This visit has also helped build a good rapport with various colleges and institutions.

Chauntra Students Participate at Mountain Children’s Conference (TOP)

Tenzin Tselha and Thinlay Wangchuk of CST Chauntra participated at the International Mountain Children’s Conference held at Dehradun, Uttaranchal State from May 18-22. The aim of the conference was to highlight the condition of the mountain children and develop better understanding among the children living in the mountains. Sixty five students representing about 20 mountain communities from India and abroad participated in the conference. The Tibetan students gave talks on human rights abuses vis-à-vis the present situation in Tibet. They also presented traditional cultural performances which were appreciated immensely by all the participants. The national TV media interviewed the Tibetan students. His Excellency Surjit Singh Barnala, Governor of Uttaranchal was the chief guest on the closing function.

Gadhen Phodrang Scholarship: (TOP)

Dedicating to the 360th anniversary of the founding of the present Tibetan Government of Gadhen Phodrang, 10 scholarships will be awarded for the next three years i.e. 2002, 2003 & 2004. This year the following Class XII graduates have been selected to receive the award:

Annual Scholarship Award: (TOP)

Department of Education, CTA, after scrutinising all the applicants, has awarded 61scholarships for meritorious Tibetan students for the year 2002-03 to pursue undergraduate, graduate and professional degree courses. In addition, twenty students from CST schools have been selected to receive CTSA scholarships for the year 2002-03 for pursuing higher studies.

Preliminary Selection for Pestalozzi Village, UK Scholarship 2003: (TOP)

In the preliminary selection for scholarship to undergo baccalaureate program(Class XI-XII) at the Pestalozzi Village, U.K., twenty secondary(Class X) school graduates have been selected. The final selection test and interview was conducted on July 24-25 at New Delhi.

Fulbright Orientation Programme: (TOP)

Department of Education conducted 5 days orientation programme from July 8-12 in Dharamsala for the fifteen Fulbright Scholarship students selected for the year 2002. They left for USA in August 2002. Dr. Vijaya Khandavilli and Ms. Rupali Verma from U.S. Educational Foundation India (USEFI), Delhi were invited as special speakers. They gave talks on the rigors of student life in the United States and on social and cultural adjustments which are necessary. The participants were also given orientation on human rights situation in Tibet, present condition of Tibet in international scenario, interaction with Chinese students, environmental concern in Tibet and computer education.

Tibetan Homes School, Mussoorie (TOP)

Morning Assembly Tibetan Homes School is located in the beautiful hill station of Mussoorie in the state of Uttaranchal at an elevation of 6500 feet above sea level facing the panoramic Doon Valley. It is run by the Tibetan Homes Foundation (THF), a registered society founded in 1962 and formally inaugurated on April 23,1963 by His Holiness the Dalai Lama with an initial strength of 75 children. The school today has grown into a fine co-education residential cum day school providing education to children mostly new refugees from Tibet and destitute children. There are over 1,500 students and nearly sixty teachers and staff in the school. The school is affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Delhi with classes from Montessori to Class XII and having humanities, science and commerce streams at the senior secondary level.

The school aims at all round development of the child’s personality by providing a good education and inculcating in the students a desire for life long learning and motivating towards good moral values to become a responsible citizen. The students are not confined to classroom teaching but are being exposed to various outdoor and indoor games like football, basketball, volleyball, throw ball, badminton, athletic events, cross country race among boys and girls at house level and inter school level. The students actively participate in co-curricular activities like short plays, debates, quizzes, elocution, drawing and essay competitions.

The school also conducts outdoor excursion for Class XI students every year to historical places like Delhi, Jaipur and Agra, and trekking in and around Doon Valley to the other classes as well. The school boasts of imparting modern means of education through extensive use of computers, audio-visuals, well-equipped science laboratories and a spacious well-stocked library. The school has also set up a teaching aids centre keeping in view its importance for the teaching-learning process enabling the teachers to provide more effective teaching. The senior students are also provided with guidance and counselling from a school career counsellor acquainting them about new courses available, their scope and prospect after the class XII graduation.

To promote and preserve the rich culture and tradition, in addition to Tibetan language instruction, traditional performing arts are taught. Besides every year, the school observes a Tibet week, exhibiting the various facets of Tibetan life and traditions to enrich the students about our distinct culture and tradition to keep them alive in their minds.

The school has produced improved results consistently for the last four years in the Class XII CBSE board examinations. The pass percentage in the board examinations held in March this year was 88.73% (Class XII) and 77.1% (Class X). Mr. Pema Damdul Arya is the current General Secretary of the Tibetan Homes Foundation. Mr. Ngodup Norbu and Mr. Yankyap are the senior and junior headmasters of the school respectively. The school owes its success to the kind blessings and guidance of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and to the moral and financial support of friends, sponsors and donors around the world to whom the school will always remain indebted.
