SCHOOL FEATURE : Tibetan Public School, Srinagar

The Tibetan Public School began formally in 1978 as a primary school with 25 students and two teachers at Iddgah in Srinagar, the capital of the Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir, where the Tibetan Muslims were settled after fleeing from Tibet in 1959 owing to Chinese repression and occupation of the country. Prior to that, informal classes were conducted, mainly religious studies with English, math and science added later.

In the early eighties, it was upgraded to middle school with classes up to eighth standard. In 1984, the school enrolment was 184 students, 82 boys and 102 girls. Later, the school was moved to Hawal in Badamwari area of Srinagar where majority of the community had shifted. The classes were held in tin sheds and there was urgent need for a proper school building. The Department of Education, Central Tibetan Administration of His Holiness the Dalai Lama provided assistance in acquiring the site for a new school and funds for construction of a three-storey school building at Badamwari. It also provided grants for setting up a computer lab and school library. On July 17, 2004, Kalon Thupten Lungrig the Education Minister of the Central Tibetan Administration inaugurated the new school building where the school had shifted. In 2007, it was upgraded to secondary school. A separate lower primary department building was constructed and furnished with funds provided by the Private Office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Tibet Relief Fund U.K through the Department of Education, CTA.
