Tibetan Students Appear for Board Examination

All India Senior School Certificate Examination (AISSCE) and All India Secondary School Examination (AISSE) conducted by Central Board of Secondary Education, Delhi was held in March this year. 1626 students of Class X from 26 schools and 1159 students of Class XII from 14 schools have appeared for the Board examinations. The examination results are expected by the last week of May.

Twenty-one school heads from Tibetan schools located in Nepal and India attended a capacity building workshop conducted by the Department of Education from October 24-November 1, 2007 at the College for Higher Tibetan Studies (CHTS), Sarah, Dharamsala. The executive secretary and administrator of Snow Lion Foundation, Kathmandu, and Rectors of CTSA residential schools also participated in the workshop.

Education Secretary Ven. Karma Gelek Yuthok was chief guest at the inaugural function attended among others, by the Principal CHTS and project sponsor DANIDA consultant Leo H. Knudsen from the Centre for International Cooperation in Education (CICED), Copenhagen. Besides orientation on Basic Education Policy (BEP), experts on Tibetan traditional education system, inclusive education, dialectics, counseling, yoga and pranayam were invited. Kalon Tripa, CTA spoke to the participants on the salient features of BEP.  Education Kalon, Thupten Lungrig was the chief guest at the closing ceremony.



In-service Teacher Training for Music & Dance Teachers

Twenty-eight Music & Dance teachers from 24 schools under the Central Tibetan Schools Administration (CTSA), Delhi attended a workshop on techniques of teaching different forms of performing arts was organised by the Department of Education at the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts, Mcloed Ganj from November 20 - 29, 2007. The participants were also introduced to BEP, Yoga & Pranayam. Education Kalon andSecretary were the chief guests at the inaugural and valedictory functions respectively.

Orientation Course for Pre-Primary Teachers

Fifty pre-primary teachers from Tibetan Children's Village (TCV) and Tibetan Homes Foundation (THF) schools attended an orientation course on Basic Education Policy (BEP) conducted by DOE from December 21-28, 2007 at the College for Higher Tibetan Studies, Sarah, near Dharamsala. Pre-primary teachers from Yongling Day School, Sherab Gatsel Lobling, STS Dekyiling and Ngoenga School also attended the course. Education Secretary was the chief guest in the inaugural function. The orientation course is part of the series of on-going capacity building workshops for teachers and school heads conducted by DOE since the adoption of the BEP in 2004.

Talks were arranged on BEP, montessori methodology and evaluation, traditional education, logic counseling, child health and inclusive education. Kalon Tripa, Education Kalon and Secretary had in depth interacted with the participants on the basic education policy.  Kalon Thupten Lungrig gave away the course completion certificates to the participants at the closing function.

Workshops for Science Teachers

The Tibet Charity (India), an NGO based in Dharamsala in collaboration with DOE conducted two workshops for science teachers of Tibetan schools in north India. The first was conducted at CST Chauntra October 1-5,`07 for 12 science teachers from 7 schools viz. TCV schools at Chauntra, Suja, Dharamsala; STSS schools at Bhuntar, Chauntra; and CTSA schools of Dalhousie, Shimla. Education Secretary Ven. Karma Gelek Yuthok was the chief guest at the inaugural function. The second was held at Tibetan Homes School, Mussoorie October 15-19,`07 and attended by 17 teachers from 8 schools, viz. THS Mussoorie & Rajpur; TCV Selakui; CST Herbertpur & Mussorie; STS Bhuntar & Paonta Sahib and TNMF Clementown. THF General Secretary Tashi Phuntsok inaugurated the workshop.

Mr. Leif Henriksen, a science teacher trainer from Denmark was the resource person for the workshops. Tibet Charity had earlier sponsored and conducted science teacher workshops at Bylakuppe and Gangtok covering schools in the south and north-east including Nepal. Participants found the workshops practical oriented and very beneficial for their professional development.

PET Workshop

An eight-day workshop for Physical Education Teachers (PETs) was conducted at CHTS Sarah from March 18-25,`08 attended by 26 PETs from 21 schools under Tibetan Children's Villages, Sambhota Tibetan Schools Society, Tibetan Homes Foundation, Snow Lion Foundation, Tibetan Nehru Memorial Foundation School, Ngoenga School for Tibetans with Special Needs and CHTS. The workshop mainly focused on physical education as enshrined in the Basic Education Policy viz.various forms of traditional Tibetan physical exercises, yoga, breathing exercises pranayam, natural health treatments such as baths, massage, lotion application etc.

Resource persons from Patanjali Yog Samiti of Kangra district conducted daily 3-hour early morning sessions on yoga and pranayam. Medical doctors from Tibetan Medical & Astro Institute, Dharamsala gave theory and practical classes on traditional natural health treatments and hygiene. Resource persons from Tibetan Delek Hospital gave several sessions on First Aid. The workshop was greatly appreciated by the participants. Education Secretary addressed the inaugural and valedictory functions.

School Inspections

  • Education Officer Tsering Samdup visited STS Bhuntar and CST Manali for annual inspection from October 4-6,`07. Later, he visited CST Bir and CST Chauntra along with STSS Director Karma Chungdak from Oct. 8-9, 2007. They also made joint inspection to CST Paonta Sahib, CST Puruwala and STS Dekyiling from November 4-13,`07.
  • Education Officer Tsering Phuntsok, DOE along with Education Officer C. Dharuman, CTSA visited CST Kalimpong and CST Sonada from October 30 to November 2,`07 for annual school inspection. CST Kalimpong is a senior secondary school with 470 students from Kindergarten to Class XII and 46 staff. CST Sonada, a secondary school has 224 students with 24 staff. Both the schools are under the management of CTSA.
  • On November 5-6,`07, Education Officer Tsering Phuntsok visited STS Shillong, a primary boarding school located in the capital of Mehgalaya State under the management of STSS.  The school has 101 students and 18 staff.

During visits, the inspectors inspected school facilities, interacted with the students and teachers and observed classroom learning, class exhibitions and cultural shows performed by students.



Counseling Workshop for Teachers

South Zone Guidance and Counseling Cell (a branch of Department of Education's Guidance & Counseling Cell) organized a workshop at Dekyi Larsoe Conference Hall from November 13-17,`07.  Fourteen teacher counselors from eleven schools of Central Tibetan School Administration, two from schools under Sambhota Tibetan School Society and one from Tibetan Children's Village Schools attended the workshop. With 4 sessions daily a total of 20 sessions were covered during the five-day workshop.  The topics covered ranged from counseling skills to gender in education. The methods used were lecture, interactive discussion, role-play, games & hands on activities. The workshop resource persons included Dr. Ali Khwaja (PhD in Counseling), Chairman of the Banjara Group, an organization providing counseling, training, career guidance and life skills coaching, Mr. Shanmukh V. Kamble (Senior Lecturer, Department of Psychology, Karnatak University, Dharwad), Ms. Asha & Ms. Uma Madan (Faculty member of Banjara Academy) and Ms. Tenzin Tseyang from Planning Commission, CTA, Dharamsala.

School Counseling

Counselor Ms. Donkar Wangmo visited Central School for Tibetans Chauntra and STS Bhuntar to provide guidance services to the students of these schools from March 24-April 2, 2008. The Counselor provided classroom guidance to the students above class VI. Apart from this, the Counselor met students individually to address their concerns regarding academic, personal/social and career/vocation. The Counselor also provided consultation services to the parents & staff of the schools during the field visit.

East Zone Resident Counselor, Ms. Chokey Lhamo, visited four schools viz. CST, Miao, CST Tezu, CST Tenzingang and Sambhota Tibetan School Shillong to provide guidance services to the students of these schools from February 20-March 14,`08. During the 3-week tour, the Counselor conducted classroom guidance, met students one on one and also met with teachers and parents.



Parental Counseling

South Zone Resident Counselor, Mr. Jamyang Wangyal, visited four Tibetan Settlements viz Dhondenling Kollegal, Rabgyeling Hunsur, Lugsung Samdupling Bylakuppe and Dekyi Larsoe Bylakuppe to provide counseling to parents from February 16-21,`08. The topics covered were: 1) How parents can understand their child and help in their overall development. 2) How parents can help their child in school. 3) Tips to raise their child’s self esteem. 4) Understanding different signs and symptoms indicating child stress. 5) Understanding signs and symptoms of addictions in their child. 6) How parents can help their child to cope with exam fear. 7) Helping their child to set their careers. 8)Steps involved in choosing the right career. The counselor also provided wide awareness on DOE Scholarships in India and abroad.

The Tibetan Children’s Village school at Gopalpur, about 30 kms from Dharamsala in the state of Himachal Pradesh, is under the management of Tibetan Children's Villages Head Office based in Dharamsala Cantt. The school was established in September 1997. SOS Norway and SOS Switzerland provided funds for setting up school facilities and the Children’s Village respectively.

This Village has a sprawling campus of forty acres amidst tea gardens; pine trees and remains green all the year round. TCV Gopalpur has one of best physical environments among the TCV schools. All the building facilities were well planned and fully used. The Village Chorten completed in 2007, gives TCV Gopalpur its Tibetan ambience and provide opportunity for spiritual sensitization and daily practice. This is also the PEACE ZONE for the village.

The classes range from Montessori - XII. It is divided into three sections for administrative purpose – The House of Children for Montessori classes, the Primary section for class I – VI and the Senior section covering classes VII – XII.  The school is the TCV Center for Humanities Stream at senior secondary level. Each section has a Headmaster/ Headmistress who is responsible for running the section on a daily basis. The Principal is the administrative head of the school and coordinates all school activities. Mr. Phuntsok Tashi is the current principal. The school is affiliated to Central Board for Secondary Education. So far six batches of class X and four batches of class XII have sat for the CBSE Board examinations. In 2007, the results of Class X & XII were 85.45% and 99.45% respectively.

Presently there are 1500 children with over 450 at the +2 level alone. For most children, TCV Gopalpur is more than a school- it is home for them. There are thirty cottages or homes for all children below class IX and the seniors live in the four hostels. All cooking is done at home or in the hostels. The Village Director is the Executive Head. Being the father figure of the Village, he is responsible for the over-all management and smooth administration of the Village. Mr. Pasang Wangdu is the current Village Director.



 

  • Three books titled: The Old Lady Who Built the Boudha Stupa in Nepal; The Foolish Boy & Buddhist Stupas in Tibet have been published and distributed to all Tibetan schools under the financial support from ARTIC, Japan.
  • The first lot of nearly 2000 technical terms is ready for submission to the standardising authority to be appointed by Kashag.
  • Department of Education supported a three-day seminar cum workshop on scientific terminology organised by the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives, Dharamsala from March 18-20. Six DOE staff involved in the Terminology Project and textbook translation also participated.
  • The Tibetan translation of the Science & Technology textbooks (NCERT) for Class VII & VIII have been published and sample copies will soon be sent to all schools as reference books. A second set of ten comic series on Tibetan kings-'bod-kyi tsen-poe gyalrab' have been published and will soon be sent to the schools. These two sets of books have been funded by Comic Relief through Tibet House Trust, London U.K. (3 PICs)
  • 'Nyugsar' Vol. 10 & 11, a collection of Tibetan essays by students); and 'Sherig' Journal, Vol. 7, a compilation of articles on education, have also been published with funding assistance from Denmark International Development Assistance (DANIDA) and freely distributed to all schools. (3PICs)
  • DOE has reviewed and published 'tsuglag jug-go', written by Ven. Wangdu Phuntsok, Cultural & Spritual Teacher of CST Shimla. It is an easy to understand commentary book for the beginners based on Grammar Book written by Sakya Pandit Kunga Gyaltsen. One thousand copies have been printed for free distribution to the schools. The book is also available for sale from Tibetan Cultural & Religious Publication Centre (Sherig Parkhang), Delhi/Dharamsala.


  1. AET projects completed:
    1. Classroom Library:
      To inculcate love of literature and self-reading habit among the pupils, the need for classroom library was felt. With funds provided by Aide a` l' Enfance Tibetaine (AET), a variety of books have been purchased for five Sambhota Tibetan Schools at Gangtok, Chauntra, Puruwala, Paonta and Dekyiling enabling easy access to students in the classroom.

    2. Hostel Library:
      Although most of the Tibetan schools have school library, there is a problem with the accessibility of the books before and after school hours and during holidays. With funds from AET, a small library have been set up in the hostels (boys and girls separately) in ten residential schools under CTSA and STSS to encourage students reading habits especially for Classes VIII and above.  The ten beneficiary schools are CST Mundgod, CST Shimla, CST Sonada, CST Darjeeling, CST Kalimpong, CST Mussoorie, CST Dalhousie STS Bhuntar, CST Chauntra and CST Paonta Sahib.  The students have been greatly benefited.

    3. STSS School Furniture:
      A need for new furniture was greatly felt in some of the Sambhota schools for classrooms, library and computer laboratories. The Sambhota schools at Paonta, Dekyiling, Chauntra and Bhuntar have completed procurement of required furniture and fixtures with funds from AET.

  2. CST Chauntra Project:
    The urgent need for toilets in the primary classroom block at CST Chauntra has been met with assistance provided by the Tibet Fruende, Switzerland. The children and staff members have been greatly benefited.
  3. School Clinic Project:
    The SOIR/IM has been providing annual fund for medical and health related programmes in six schools viz.:CST Dalhousie, CST Poanta, CST Mundgod, CST Shimla, CST Darjeeling and CST Kalimpong. The funds go a long way in supplementing medical supplies in the school clinics and treatment of patients. Department of Education, CTA would like to thank SOIR/IM, Sweden for the generous support.
  4. Supplementary Diet Program:
    With the kind support from Ms Ann Down, an American philanthropist through Dr. Lobsang Sangay, we are now implementing the program successfully in ten Tibetan schools. The program has contributed immensely in improving the diet and general health of the children in the schools. We would like to thank Ms Ann Down for the generous support in 2006 and 2007.
  5. Computer Training Project:
    Three months computer training was provided to 17 final year students of the Tibetan Transit School in two batches at Apar Institute of Computer Education in Delhi. The students were trained in Microsoft office applications, web designing, illustrators, page maker, photo shop etc. They trainees were awarded certificates on completion of the course. The Department of Education (DOE) and the Transit Students would like to thank Tibet Fruende for contributing funds for the training.
  6. Computer education for four Tibetan schools: 
    The Comic Relief through Tibet House Trust, London supported 20 computers in four different schools at TSTS Gangtok, STS Bhuntar, STS Dekyiling and CST Chauntra. The need for computer is always felt in our schools.  We would like to thank the Comic Relief, London for their kind support.


  1. The High Level Scholarship Committee (HLSC) of CTA made short listing of US Tibetan Scholarship Program for 2009, in which 33 candidates for the Degree program and 17 candidates for the Non-Degree Program were found eligible to appear for preliminary selection test from April 15-24, 2008 in New Delhi. The final selection will be done through interview with panel experts chaired by Mr. Nicholas Namba, Cultural Affairs Officer for Exchanges, Embassy of the United States of America, New Delhi.
  2. The Department of Education has made the following public announcements:
    - Annual DoE Scholarships for the year 2008 with last date of submission of application on June 16, 2008 - Research Scholarship (Computer Sc.& Information Technology), application deadline on June 16, 2008
    - Songtsen Scholarship with application deadline on June 30, 2008
    - Atlantic UWC, Mahindra UWC, Pestalozzi Scholarships with application deadline on June 12, 2008

Jampa Receiving Ph. D. degree from the Vice-Chancellor of Karnataka University

  1. The Department of Education conducted Entrance Test for selection for the reserve seats in MBBS (3 seats) and Engineering (7 seats) for the year 2008. The test was held on April 4, 2008 at two centers viz. New Delhi and Bangalore. 
  2. The selection test for the Master Degree program in the University of Wyoming, USA was conducted from Jan.15-16, 2008. Five eligible candidates have been short-listed and their applications were sent directly to the university for final selection. The result is awaited. This year the university has decided to sponsor two students. 
  3. Academic Accomplishment: Mr. Jampa Thupten has successfully completed his Ph. D in Geography from Karnatak University in 2007 under scholarship provided by the Department of Education. He received his Ph. D degree from the Vice-Chancellor of Karnatak University, Dharwad at a convocation held on 13th February 2008. He has expressed his deep thanks to the Department of Education for the scholarship. He is presently working as a geography teacher to senior classes at CST Paonta Sahib.
