National Teacher's Award Recipients 2006

Two teachers of the Central Tibetan Schools Administration (CTSA) received the National Award to Teachers-2006 from Her Excellency Pratibha Patil, the President of India on Teachers' Day in New Delhi on September 5. Mr. Norlha Tsering, Primary Teacher of Central School for Tibetans (CST) CVP Bylakuppe in Karnataka State and Mr. D.S. Bisht, Woodcraft Teacher of the CST Herbertpur in Uttarakhand State, were recipients of this year's prestigious national award along with other 314 teachers from across India. The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 25,000, a silver medal and a certificate of merit. The Department of Education (DOE), Central Tibetan Administration congratulates both the teachers.

The toppers amongst Tibetan students who appeared in the All India Senior Secondary Certificate Examination held in March 2007 were presented the Gadhen Phodrang Student Merit Awards and prize money of Rs.5000/- each. Kalon Tripa presented the awards at the Tibetan Democracy Day annual celebration held at Tsuglag-khang, Dharamsala on September 2. The recipients were Miss Kalsang Chodon of CST Mundgod for Science (86.8%), Mr. Sonam Topgyal of SOS TCV Bylakuppe for Commerce (89.4%) and Mr. Thinley Wangchuk of CST Mussoorie for Humanities (85.2%). Kalsang Chodon and Sonam Topgyal, in their respective streams, broke the past record by securing the highest percentage of marks so far achieved by Tibetan students in the AISSCE examinations.

The 18th Annual Meeting of CTSA Heads of schools & Rectors was held at Shimla on July 13-14. Mr. S.C. Khuntia, Joint Secretary, Govt. of India and Chairman, CTSA inaugurated the meeting. He spoke on all the aspects of school administration offering valuable suggestions for achieving academic excellence and a more congenial school environment. During the meeting, Mr. Ashok Ganguly, Chairman of Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Delhi deliberated on effective leadership and practical aspects of day-to-day school life. Mr. Vineet Joshi, Director CTSA also discussed the various issues pertaining to schools. He advised the heads of schools to make themselves aware of the latest trends in education. Mr. Ngodup Dorjee, Additional Secretary & Mr. Tashi Norbu Rikha, Joint Secretary, DOE, Dharamsala also participated in the deliberations. They expressed the need for further improvement in academics and administration of the schools. All the Heads & Rectors brought to the notice of the officials the problems being faced by them in day to day functioning of the schools.



NHSS Excel Nepal School Board Exam 2007

The students of Namgyal Higher Secondary School, Gorkhana in Kathmandu excelled in the Nepal Higher Secondary Board Examination 2007 declared on 15 August. Of the 50 students who appeared, 30 students attained first division and the remaining second division, a pass percentage of 100 percent. The national pass percentage stood at 52 per cent.



CTSA Workshops

CTSA conducted two-day workshops in collaboration with CBSE, Delhi held at CTSA Training Wing on the design of question paper and new syllabus for teachers of class X and XII. Workshops were conducted separately for postgraduate teachers of economics (Aug 17-18) and accountancy (Aug 21-22) and trained graduate teachers of social studies (Aug. 24-25), science (Aug. 27-28) and mathematics (Aug. 28-29). Thirty-one teachers from Tibetan Children's Village Schools, Tibetan Homes Schools and Sambhota Tibetan School also attended the workshop.

DOE Counselor, Ms. Dolkar Wangmo visited six schools namely CST Mussoorie, CST Herbertpur, CST Paonta Sahib, TNMF School Clementown, THF Mussoorie & STS Dickyiling to provide guidance & counseling services to the students from August 27-September 23. Topics covered include understanding self, goal setting, interpersonal relationships, communication skills, time management, stress management, value education, making choices & decision making, physical growth & changes, SWOT analysis, career options & assessment, admission procedure & DOE scholarships etc. The Counselor met with students individually one on one and in small groups to help them deal with their problems and also talked to parents on "how to raise a caring & responsible child" and informed about educational opportunities available in and outside the community. During the tour, Counselor Ms. Dolkar Wangmo was Resource Person for the Workshop entitled "Teacher as a Counselor" organized by Tibetan Homes Foundation for the teaching staff of their schools at Mussoorie and Rajpur. DOE South Zone Counselor, Mr. Jamyang Wangyal visited schools located in the five Tibetan Settlements in the South such as CST Mundgod, CST Bylakuppe, CST CVP Bylakuppe, CST Gurupura, CST Kollegal & CST Chandragiri from July 23-August 30 and DOE East Zone Counselor Ms. Chokey Lhamo visited CST Darjeeling, CST Sonada, CST Kalimpong, CST Ravangla, Sambhota Tibetan Schools at Pokhriabong & Gangtok from July 27-August 11. Both of them covered the topics mentioned above & met students individually as well as counseled parents.



School Inspections

Education Officer Tsering Phuntsok visited Thumi Sambhota Tibetan School, Gangtok in Sikkim on September 3-4 and Sambhota Tibetan School, Pokhriabong (near Darjeeling) on September 8 to conduct annual school inspection. Subsequently, he joined CTSA Education Officer Mr. S.P. Rana for the annual inspection of CST Ravangla in Sikkim on September 5 and CST Darjeeling on September 6-7. The inspection panel members examined the utilisation of various physical and educational facilities provided in the schools and observed classroom teaching and learning. They interacted with the students and teachers and observed exhibitions, cultural activities and yoga/aerobic exercises organised and performed by the students. The Representatives of Gangtok & Ravangla; and Principal, Rector and headmaster of concerned schools fully assisted in the inspections.



Paonta School Celebrates Silver Jubilee

Central School for Tibetans, Paonta Sahib organized its 25th Athletic Meet, a Silver Jubilee Celebration on Sept. 6-7. Honorable Kalon Thupten Lungrig was chief guest and declared the meet open by raising the meet flag. Mr. Karma Chungdak, Director of Sambhota Tibetan Schools Society (STSS) was also present on the occasion. The Representatives, Presidents, Principals of different Tibetan & non-Tibetan institutions/schools attended the celebration. Five schools of middle level and above under the management of STSS viz. CST Chauntra, STS Bhuntar, STS Dekyiling, Thumi Sambhota Tibetan School, Gangtok and the host school CST Paonta participated in different sports events. The overall championship went to CST Paonta 188 points, followed by STS Bhuntar 169 points and CST Chauntra 133 points. The Honorable Kalon distributed the prizes to the participants during the closing function.



SCHOOL FEATURE Central School for Tibetans, Ravangla

School view of CST RavanglaCentral School for Tibetans, Ravangla is located at the Kunphenling Tibetan settlement in Ravangla, a beautiful hill station in south Sikkim, on a 2-acre land on the Ravangla-Namchi main road with the great Kanchenjunga mountain in the background. The school is run by the Central Tibetan Schools Administration under the Ministry of Human Resource Development of the Government of India. Initially established in 1972 as a primary school with assistance from Sikkim Government, the school was merged with CTSA in 1984 and made a branch school of Central School for Tibetans- Kalimpong. Later on it was upgraded to a middle school imparting education to the approximately 150 students in Tibetan-medium at primary level and English-medium from classes VI to VIII. There are 18 teaching and non-teaching staff. The school's physical infrastructure consists of three blocks of buildings, a staff quarter's residential complex and boundary wall covering the entire campus. The school is fully equipped with modern educational resources. In addition to imparting learning in modern subjects, the school is very conscious about preservation of Tibetan cultural heritage and provides various opportunities to the students to participate at various levels in cultural programmes. The school is renowned in district/state for its cultural programmes. The school at present is working as an effective connecting link among the various sections of the society. The school continues to make good progress under the guidance of Local Advisory Committee chairman and vice-chairman namely, the Sub Divisional Magistrate of Ravangla and the Representative of Kunphenling Tibetan Settlement respectively. Mr. A.K Sundriyal is presently the Headmaster of the school.



Project News
  1. DCF Projects at Dekyiling Completed:

    1. Staff Quarter Construction: The school at Dekyiling has been facing shortage of staff quarters due to which teachers have to stay in rented houses. Construction of three additional staff rooms has been completed with funds provided by the Danish Children Fund, Denmark.
    2. Overhead Water Tank: Since the school has been providing mid-day meal to the children, it requires plenty of water for cooking and cleaning. Construction of new water tank was felt necessary and the DCF has generously accepted to support this project. The new water tank, with a capacity to store up to 40000litres, has been constructed.

      We thank the DCF for the generous support.

  2. ARTIC Projects Completed:

    1. Chauntra School children's playground renovation: The play equipments of the children's park at CST Chauntra have become worn-out and damaged. During the ARTIC member visit to the school, they felt that the children's park needed renovation and generously accepted to support it. With the funds from ARTIC, Japan, all the play materials were repaired and park renovated. The children are now happy with the park's new look.
    2. Musical Instruments: ARTIC also accepted to fund the repair and purchase of new musical instruments after seeing the existing musical instruments condition at the school. The school has been able to procure enough musical instruments for the children to organize cultural shows in the school with the funds from ARTIC, Japan. We thank ARTIC, Japan for their kind support.


Scholarship News
  1. The selection test for the 2-year International Baccalaureates studies at United World Colleges (UWC) were conducted from June 31-July 10 with following results:
    1.   Ms. Tenzin Yewong, TCV Gopalpur was selected for UWC Atlantic, UK. She left   in   August 2007.
    2.   Mr. Tenzin Rabga, TCV, Upper Dharamsala was selected for UWC Mahindra, Pune, India. He joined college from 1st September 2007.
    3. Ms. Tsering Youkey, TCV, Upper Dharamsala was selected for UWC Costa Rica. She is scheduled to depart to Costa Rica in October 2007.

    Derek Marshall during Pestalozzi Scholarship Selection

    Mr. Derek Marshall, Chief Executive Officer of Pestalozzi International Village was here from July 7-10 to conduct selection test for 2008 Pestalozzi Scholarship to undergo two-year International Baccalaureates Course at Hastings College (UK).  The result is awaited. Four students selected last year for 2007 Pestalozzi scholarship left for UK in August 2007.


  3. Ms. Nima Bhuti, recipient of OISCA, Japan scholarship for training in General Agriculture left on September 5.

  4. Mr. Tashi Namgyal, selected for 2007 University of Wyoming's scholarship to pursue Master Degree departed for USA in July 2007.

  5. The 2007 batch of 17 students selected under Tibetan Scholarship Program for higher studies in Universities in the US left in the first week of August 2007.

  6. Scholarship Announcement in August & September 2007:
    1. Richardson Foundation- 1 scholarship (Undergraduate or Postgraduate studies) in UK.
    2. University of Wyoming, USA- 1 scholarship for Master Degree.

The Department whole-heartedly thanks all the above institutions for providing such educational opportunities to our younger generation.

This year Songtsen Scholarship Committee appointed by DOE, held meetings on July 16-25 to nominate 10 eligible candidates for 2007 Songtsen Scholarship.
