Board Examinations held

All India Senior School Certificate Examinations (AISSCE) and All India Secondary School Examinations (AISSE) conducted by Central Board of Secondary Education, Delhi started from March 1. About 1200 students of Class X from 24 Tibetan schools and 990 students of Class XII from 12 schools in India appeared in the above examinations. The examination results are generally declared in the last week of May.

Institutional Heads and Rectors Workshop

Central Tibetan Schools Administration (CTSA) organised a workshop for all Heads of Institutions & Rectors of Central Schools for Tibetans (CST) to give exposure to latest trends in education and administration at the Deen Dayal Upadhyay State Institute of Rural Development, Lucknow from January 3-9. The Principal of Tibetan Homes School, Mussoorie and Headmaster of Tibetan Children’s Village, Chauntra also took part in the workshop. Notable among the eminent resource persons that interacted with the participants was Shri Ashok Ganguly, Chairman, Central Board of Secondary Education, Delhi who spoke on New Initiatives of CBSE & Leadership in Education. Dr. M.S. Verma, Director of CTSA and Education Officers from CTSA also participated in the workshop. Mr. Tashi N. Rikha, Joint Secretary & Mr. Tsering Phuntsok, Education Officer from the Department of Education, CTA attended last two days of the workshop.

Terminology Workshop

A three-day workshop on Evolution and Standardisation of Technical Terminology was conducted in Delhi from March 19-23. Eleven representatives of various institutions attended the workshop. Besides the three resource persons from the Department of Education, CTA, three Indian experts, namely Dr. N.K. Vyas, former General Editor & Director of Central Hindi Directorate & CSTT; Dr. D.N. Pant, former Deputy Director of Commission for Scientific and Technical Terminology and Dr. S.C.L. Sharma from CSTT were invited and their over 50 years’ experience and expertise in the subject enlightened the participants. We thank SOIR-IM for financial support and CHD & CSTT for their guidance and co-operation.

CTSA Director & Jt. Secy DOE Visit Schools

Dr. M.S. Verma, Director CTSA and Mr. Tashi N. Rikha, Joint Secretary DOE made an official tour of CST Mundgod, its branch school and CST Camp 6, Mundgod from February 19-22. Mr. C. Dharuman, Education officer CTSA accompanied them. They were given a warm reception at Bangalore by the CTA South Zone Chief Representative and at Mundgod by the Settlement Officer, Principal, Rector, Headmasters, camp leaders and members of various local organisations. They inspected the school facilities, observed classroom instruction and interacted with the students and staff. During the visit, they also met with Parent-Teacher Association members, camp leaders and representatives of community organisations. The Director inaugurated a new block consisting of 15 classrooms and the new 3-story Girls Hostel at CST Mundgod, constructed with funds donated by the Abbot of Gaden Monastery. They also paid a brief visit to Drepung Loseling School, a grant in aid school of CTSA.

On March 16-17, they made their first visit to Central School for Tibetans, Tezu at Dhargyaling Tibetan Settlement in the state of Arunachal Pradesh. Mr. S.P.Rana, Deputy Education Officer CTSA accompanied them. The Settlement Officer, Headmaster, camp leaders and PTA members extended them a warm reception. During visit they inspected the school facilities and interacted with students, staff and community members.

Tibetan Schools Celebrate Parents Day

Parents Day was observed in all Tibetan schools in India, Nepal and Bhutan on March 5. In his Parents’ Day message to the schools, the Education Secretary, CTA exhorted the parents that they should inculcate modern and traditional values of life in their children besides their studies at school. He also advised the teachers not to confine themselves merely to classroom teaching of prescribed textbooks but also be duty bound in providing guidance to the children to make them better human beings.

The day has been observed since 1978 in memory and coinciding the birth anniversary of Gyalyum Chenmo Dekyi Tsering, the late mother of His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama.

Guidance & Counselling

Counselor Ms. Donkar Wangmo visited TCV School, Dharamsala Cantt. on February 3 and counselled students of Class XII (Science) on the reserve seats for medicine & engineering courses and its eligibility criteria; careers in science; admission procedure to various colleges and universities in India; rules and regulations concerning Fulbright & other overseas scholarships; and provided guidance on how to avail the scholarships offered by Berea College, USA that is no longer processed through education department. She then interacted with the students and answered their queries.

On February 16 she visited TCV Gopalpur and spoke to the Class XII Arts students on DOE scholarships for further studies in India and abroad, their eligibility criteria and how to apply. She also talked on various career options for Arts students after school and how to apply to various colleges and universities in India. She counselled the students on how to cope with the transition and the importance of time management. The talk was followed by question - answer session.

Cultural Awareness Programme

Cultural awareness talks were arranged at schools in the far northeast viz. CST Tezu, CST Tenzingang, CST Miao & STS Shillong from February 21 to March 4. Ven. Ngawang Chodon and Ven. Ngawang Tendol accompanied by volunteer counsellor Mr. Jamyang Wangyal visited the schools and gave talks to promote cultural & social awareness among students, staff and the local Tibetan community. They stressed on the importance of preserving the rich Tibetan culture, traditions and language and students were also provided guidance on developing a positive attitude and in making proper career choices.

Tibetan Student Earns Laurels in US School

Tenzin Nyandak, a student at Cottage Grove High School in Oregon USA recently was the proud recipient of two honours. A local television station, KMTR chose him as Prep Athlete of the Week for being an outstanding basketball player. He was the captain of basketball team this season. Tenzin was also selected as the school's Homecoming King from among 100 senior boys for his exemplary character and leadership qualities. Last year he was one of two boys in his 11th grade class of over 200 students to receive a citizenship award. Principal Donn R. Pollard of Cottage Grove High School describes him as a solid student and a fine young man who is respected by both students and staff at the school and wished they had more students like him. The Department of Education, CTA congratulates Tenzin Nyandak for his outstanding achievements.

Workshop on Tibetan Culture & Democracy for School Children

A workshop for school children on Tibetan culture and democratic ideals was conducted at Dharamsala from December 21-29. It was organised and sponsored by the Tibetan Parliamentary & Policy Research Centre (TPPRC) based in New Delhi. Fifty-three senior boys and girls and one teacher each from 16 Tibetan schools attended the workshop. It was inaugurated by the Vice-Chairman of Assembly of Tibetan People's Deputies (ATPD), Mrs. Dolma Gyari and valedictory function was presided by Education Kalon Thupten Lungrig. The participants were also introduced to various organs and functions of the Central Tibetan Administration and other NGOs. Among the notable speakers at the workshop were the Chief Justice Commissioner Namgyal Tsering Dralnang, Chairman of ATPD Pema Jungney, Kalon Tripa Prof. S. Rinpoche and Secretaries of various departments.

Central School for Tibetans, Tezu

CST Tezu was established in 1964 with 20 students in a small hut at Dhargyeling Tibetan Settlement, Tezu in the state of Arunachal Pradesh, in northeast India. This middle school under the management of Central Tibetan Schools Administration, Delhi caters to the education of children of the settlers. The curriculum followed is the same as in any other Tibetan schools in India and children are taught Tibetan and English languages along with mathematics, science, social studies and drawing. The medium of instruction is in Tibetan up to the primary level. The Department of Education, CTA and TCV Educational Development Resource Centre, Dharamsala publish the textbooks for all primary level subjects except English.

At present, the school has an enrolment of 140, which includes pre-primary students and staff strength of 15. The infrastructure facilities include spacious classrooms, a resource-centre, library, junior science lab, computer lab and a multi-purpose hall. The school has a sprawling campus with a football ground and a badminton court. In the Common Annual Examinations held in 2004 for Class V & Class VIII, the school achieved 100% pass rate. The students actively involve themselves in co-curricular activities like inter-house literary and cultural competitions, games & sports. The school maintains good rapport with the local community. The students participated in the ‘Bal Jagat’ programmes of All India Radio, Tezu in 2004 and also engage in community service by raising donation for the Tsunami disaster victims. The settlement office and the parent-teacher association take keen interest and extend full co-operation in the overall school development. Mr. H.C. Gupta is the present Headmaster of the school.

Children's Reading Materials
‘Romeo and Juliet’ a comic book in Tibetan language financed by ARTIC, Japan and ‘Tsartam’ a collection of over 200 stories sponsored by SOIR-IM will soon be distributed to all Tibetan schools in India, Nepal and Bhutan. The 15th issue of Gangjong children’s magazine is in the press.

Class VI Math & Science Textbooks (Tibetan Medium)

 


Medium of instruction at all primary schools is in Tibetan. However from middle school, the medium of instruction is in English. To facilitate learning during this transition stage, DOE has brought out Tibetan edition of the textbooks in Mathematics and Science & Technology for Class VI. The books can be used as supplementary readers and complimentary copies will be sent to all schools. NCERT has given their kind permission for translation of the textbooks.

Mathematics Textbook for Class III (Revised)

Following the revision of mathematics textbooks for Class III by NCERT in 2002, the Department of Education, CTA has accordingly revised the Tibetan edition of the textbook and has already been published this year. The revised textbooks for Class IV & V will subsequently be published in 2006 & 2007 respectively. The publication of the book was made possible through generous financial assistance of Comic Relief through Tibet House Trust, London, U.K.

 

 

Comic Series on Tibetan Kings
Based on ancient Tibetan records, 12 comic series on Tibetan kings will be published to improve the Tibetan language skill and improve reading habits. This year, 4 comic series have been published for free distribution to all Tibetan schools with financial support from Comic Relief.

Project News

  • On invitation from Tibet House Trust, UK, Assistant Project Officer Mr. Tenzin Losay spent ten days in London in the second half of March. He along with Mrs. Lochoe, Secretary of THT participated in a Thematic Report Workshop organised by the charity Comic Relief (CR) which was attended by representatives of 27 agencies working in Africa, Central America and Asia. They also attended a workshop on the development of child protection policy. Through THT, Comic Relief is providing financial assistance for education related projects to the Tibetan refugees. He also met with the CR Grants Officer Ms.Helen Rehman and visited offices of other charities viz. Tibet Foundation, Tibet Relief Fund and Free Tibet Campaign. DOE would like to thank THT for providing this wonderful opportunity and exposure to our staff.

  • Mr. Hiro Sukeyasu, Mr.Takase and Mr.Tex from Japan visited the Department of Education CTA, Dharamsala and the Central School for Tibetans at Poanta Sahib from 24th February to 3rd March 2005. Their firm, Music Eight Company has been actively supporting the education of Tibetan refugee children for many years by funding a major sponsorship programme of DOE and as main donor for the development of Central School for Tibetans at Paonta Sahib. During the visit, they met with the Education Kalon, Additional Secretary and other dealing officers and discussed issues related to the sponsorship program and future projects.

    At Paonta School, they met with the children sponsored by them and discussed other development projects for the school and agreed to provide funding. They also inaugurated the newly constructed staff quarters. On their way to Delhi, they visited Tibetan Children's Village School and Vocational Centre at Selakui near Dehradun.

  • Mrs. Ingeborg Schaller, Director of Body and Balance visited the department on March 19. Later she visited CST Dalhousie and CST Chauntra and STS Pokhriabong to meet the children sponsored by her organisation and donated Euro 3000 for purchasing extra clothes for 24 new Tuting children at Chauntra and meet travel expenses for those Tuting children who were unable to visit their homes during winter vacation for many years. She also donated Euro 8000 towards school development fund for STS Pokhriabong.

  • Her Excellency Dr. Jutta Stefan Bastle, Ambassador of Austria to India visited Sambota Tibetan School, Pokhriabong near Darjeeling on 30th March to inaugurate the New Hostel Block constructed with funds provided by Body & Balance Organisation of Austria. Dr. Jutta was given a warm welcome with traditional Tibetan scarves by the Tibetan Welfare Officer, Darjeeling, school headmaster, students & staff. The Director of Body & Balance was also present during the inaugural ceremony. A lively cultural programme was presented in her honour. Mr.Ngodup Dorjee, Additional Secretary DOE attended the inaugural ceremony representing the Department of Education, CTA.
