Tibetan Schools Fare Better in Class XII Board Exam 2009

A total of 1241 Tibetan students appeared in the All India Senior School Certificate Examination (Class XII) conducted by the Central Board for Secondary Education held in March 2009, out of which 1154 students successfully passed the exam, 10 failed and 77 students (failed in one subject) placed under Compartment to reappear in July/August.  

This year, the all India CBSE pass percentage is 81%. The Tibetan schools attained a pass percentage of 92.99%, which is up by 3.25% compared to last year.

The Tibetan Children's Village school, Gopalpur based in northern India state of Himachal Pradesh topped with 100% pass, followed by Tibetan Children's Village, Bylakuppe in southern India with 96.22% in second position and Central School for Tibetans (CST) Darjeeling (95.83%), CST Kalimpong (94.74%) and CST Dalhousie (94.44%) in 3rd, 4th and 5th position respectively.

The individual toppers in the different streams are: Dorji Gyaltsen of Upper TCV school in Science stream with 88%; Kelsang Dickyi of TCV Bylakuppe in Commerce stream with 92.8% and Sangay Chodon of CST Kalimpong in Humanities stream with 87.2%.

Among the subject toppers, Rinzin Gyatso from TCV Bylakuppe topped in Tibetan with 97 marks (31 students from 14 schools secured above 90 marks in Tibetan). Dawa Tsering & Dorji Gyaltsen of Upper TCV topped in Mathematics securing 95 marks.




Girls Outperform Boys in Tenth Board Exam

The Tibetan girls fared slightly better than boys in this year's All India Secondary School Examination (Class X) conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education by securing a total pass percentage of 87.46 percent against 85.75 percent by the boys. 

Out of 1672 Tibetan students who appeared in the exam, 1453 (86.9%) passed, while 217 students were placed in compartment and have to reappear in one or more subjects. Two students failed to clear the exams. The total pass percentage of the 27 Tibetan schools is 86.9 percent this year, which is the highest so far.

Four schools, viz. CST CVP Bylakuppe, TCV Selakui, CST Mundgod and CST Chandagiri secured 100% pass. TCV Chauntra students appeared for AISSE for the first time and secured 77.42% pass. This year's topper in AISSE among Tibetan schools is Ruchika Bhatt of CST Herbertpur, followed by Ekta Aggarwal of the same school with 90.6% and Tenzin Gyalchoe of TCV Selakui with 88.4%.




Nepal Schools Excel in Secondary Board Exam

As per reports received, Namgyal Higher Secondary School, Gorkhana secured 100% result in the all Nepal SLC (Class X) Board Examination held this year. Of the 63 students, 47 obtained 1st division and rest in 2nd division. The Songtsen Bhrikuti Boarding High School secured 94.59% pass. Of the 37 students appeared, 29 obtained 1st division, 6 in 2nd division and one student failed. The Nepal national pass percentage is at 68.47%.




Kalon Tours Northeast Settlements

Education Kalon Thupten Lungrig visited Tibetan settlements in the Northeast at Tenzingang (May 20-22), Tezu (May 23-25) and Miao (May 26-28). The Kalon was given a warm welcome by the settlement officers and residents. During the tour, he visited settlement schools and interacted with the staff and school children. The Kalon returned to Dharamsala on May 31..



Education Secretary Visits Schools

Education Secretary Ven. Karma Gelek Yuthok and Mr. MVV Prasada Rao, Director of Central Tibetan Schools Administration, Delhi paid an official visit to CST Kalimpong, CST Darjeeling & TSTS Gangtok from May 5-9. The Settlement Officers, school Principals/Headmasters, teachers and parents extended them a warm welcome. During the visit, they interacted with school children, staff and the parents; inspected school facilities and observed the various educational activities conducted in the schools.



Two-Year Primary Teacher Training Conclude

The two-year primary teacher training organised by the Department of Education at the College for Higher Tibetan Studies (CHTS) at Sarah, Dharamsala concluded on May 1. At the valedictory function, Education Kalon Thupten Lungrig congratulated the 14 teacher trainees and gave away certificates to them. CHTS Principal Ven. Jampal Dakpa also spoke on the occasion. The primary teachers training was provided in accordance with the Basic Education Policy with funding assistance from the Danish Government. All the teacher trainees are now successfully working in various Tibetan schools.

School Inspection

On April 16-17, Education Officer Tsering Phuntsok along with CTSA Education Officer S.P. Rana conducted annual inspection of CST Mainpat, a middle school with 89 students and 18 staff at Phendeyling Tibetan Settlement in the Indian state of Chattisgarh. They observed classroom teaching-learning process, daily school activities and interacted with the students, teachers and parents representatives. The Settlement Officer also participated in the annual inspection as a panel member of the inspection team and provided all assistance during the visit.

Education Officer Tsering Phuntsok, along with CTSA Education Officer C. Dharuman, conducted inspection of CST Manali, a primary school under the Sambhota Tibetan Schools Society (STSS) with an enrolment of 72 students and 14 staff and a recipient of grant-in aid from Central Tibetan Schools Administration, Delhi. They observed classroom teaching and learning and interacted with the children, staff and parents.

Education Officer Tsering Phuntsok conducted annual inspection of CST Chauntra (June 29-30) and CST Bir (July 1). He observed classroom teaching learning and school activities, inspected school facilities and interacted with the staff and students. CST Chauntra, a boarding school up to secondary level with enrollment of 369 students and 42 staff, caters to Tibetan children mainly from the remote Tuting area of Arunachal Pradesh State. CST Bir is a primary school with 98 students and 12 staff. Both these schools are administered by STSS and also receive grants from CTSA.

Fresh School Graduates Attend Orientation Course

Counselor, Donkar Wangmo, provided orientation to class XII graduates of 2009 on 22nd May from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm at Gangkyi Mess, Dharamsala. The students were informed of the different scholarships provided by the Department of Education & other NGO's etc., and updated on admission dates for college or professional institutes. The session ended with Question & Answer session. A total of about 40 students attended the Orientation and were provided lunch and refreshment from the Department of Education.

Similarly, South Zone Resident Counselor Jamyang Wangyal held an orientation session on college/professional courses admission and DOE Scholarships for 40 class XII graduates taking coaching class for the Karnataka State Common Entrance Test (CET) at Mysore. On 25th May 2009, he provided a similar orientation to nearly 80 students at Bylakuppe. About 40 parents also attended the Orientation with their children. East Zone Resident Counselor, Chokyi Lhamo conducted orientation for class XII graduates on College/Professional courses admission, DOE Scholarships & American Himalayan Foundation Scholarships at the Central School for Tibetans, Darjeeling. She also organised a panel discussion, inviting two Alumni of the school. Besides, she briefed the students on how to face interview & group discussion.

Parental Counseling

Counselor, Ms. D. Wangmo provided counseling to about 60 parents on 25th April at the Community Hall of Tibetan Welfare Office, Dharamsala on scholarships, admission procedures, how to choose the right college for their children & invest money for children's education. It was followed by question & answer session. The following day, some parents came to meet the Counselor one on one at the Office.



School Visit

East Zone Counselor, Ms. Chokeyi Lhamo, visited CST Kalimpong & CST Sonada from May 18-23. During the visit, she had provided classroom guidance to class IX to XII & covered topics such as Importance of Goal Setting, Self Esteem/Confidence, Career Exploration, Stream Options & Scholarships, and Values & Vision etc. She also conducted psychological tests to 6 students on recommendation by Principals & teachers. A total of 243 students received classroom guidance from the Counselor.

The Tibetan Public School began formally in 1978 as a primary school with 25 students and two teachers at Iddgah in Srinagar, the capital of the Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir, where the Tibetan Muslims were settled after fleeing from Tibet in 1959 owing to Chinese repression and occupation of the country. Prior to that, informal classes were conducted, mainly religious studies with English, math and science added later.

In the early eighties, it was upgraded to middle school with classes up to eighth standard. In 1984, the school enrolment was 184 students, 82 boys and 102 girls. Later, the school was moved to Hawal in Badamwari area of Srinagar where majority of the community had shifted. The classes were held in tin sheds and there was urgent need for a proper school building. The Department of Education, Central Tibetan Administration of His Holiness the Dalai Lama provided assistance in acquiring the site for a new school and funds for construction of a three-storey school building at Badamwari. It also provided grants for setting up a computer lab and school library. On July 17, 2004, Kalon Thupten Lungrig the Education Minister of the Central Tibetan Administration inaugurated the new school building where the school had shifted. In 2007, it was upgraded to secondary school. A separate lower primary department building was constructed and furnished with funds provided by the Private Office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Tibet Relief Fund U.K through the Department of Education, CTA.  

Today, it is a full-fledged secondary day school with 418 students and 35 staff. The school's first batch of Class X students appeared for matriculation exams conducted by the J & K Board of School Education in October/November 2008, in which 50% secured distinction, 25 % first division and 25% second division.

The school organises various annual activities viz. mini cross-country race for Class V and above in April/May; Quran recitation contest for Class V and above; general quiz, Islamiyat quiz; nursery rhyme contest for nursery, Kindergarten classes; dictation and calligraphy competition for Class I to V; essay competition for Classes VI to X; annual sports; inter-school debates and declamation contests. The school provides various educational facilities like, science lab, computer lab, library with audio-visuals, separate play equipments for Lower Primary Department, fields for games & other track events.

The decision-making authority consists of 5 members who are trustees of the Tibetan Public School. Under this body, there is a school management committee. The school Director and Principal handle day-to-day affairs of the school. Mr. Amanullah Malik is the current school Principal.




With the approval of High Level Scholarship Committee (HLSC) of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), the Department of Education conducted final selection of candidates for the US government sponsored Tibetan Scholarship Program (TSP) for 2010 at the Bureau of H.H. the Dalai Lama, Lajpat Nagar, New Delhi from April 16-25, 2009. The Department of Education (DoE) received a total of 54 applications for Graduate Degree & non-Degree programs. 42 applicants qualified for interview. Following is the list of selected candidates after the interview:

1. Education Secretary Ven. Karma Gelek Yuthok, who is Member-Secretary of the High Level Scholarship Committee (HLSC) and Mr. Tenzing Choephel, Programme Coordinator of TSP, The Tibet Fund, New York observed the interview proceedings. The selected candidates were given orientation on April 25. They will join US universities in August 2010.

2. The Scholarship Section, DOE administered entrance test for the 3 reserve seats in Medicine (MBBS) & 7 reserve seats in Engineering courses for 2009 simultaneously at two centers- Delhi and Bangalore on April 8, 2009.

3. The University of Wyoming has selected two candidates viz. Mr. Tenzin Nyinjey and Ms. Ngawang Chokey for Master's Program in English and Engineering respectively at University of Wyoming (UW), Laramie, Wyoming. They will leave for the US in August 2009.

4. Mr. Ngawang Paljor (Upper TCV Dharamsala) was selected for the 'Tenzin Gyatso Fellowship' to pursue undergraduate degree at Emory University, Atlanta, US. He will leave for the US in July 2009.

5. Pestalozzi Scholarships for 2010 announcement was made in the first week of June 2009 across all Tibetan communities. Pestalozzi has agreed to provide three scholarships. A total of 35 applicants will be shortlisted on merit basis to appear for the final selection test to be held in Dharamsala from August 4 onwards and must report to the scholarship section of the Department of Education on August 3, 2009. The test comprises of Science, Mathematics & English written test, Interview and Listening Skills. Interested students may send their applications on or before July 24, 2009.

6. The London Metropolitan University has selected Mr. Dhundup from a pool of applicants to undertake three-year B.A. Accounting & Business for September 2009 intake. He will leave for London in the month of August 2009.

7. DOE Scholarship Committee meeting was held on June 20, 2009 to nominate candidates for Reserved seats for undergraduate study in medicine, engineering, 4-year integrated teacher education course and for diploma courses) allotted by the Government of India for Tibetan students and selection of candidates for the CTSA scholarships (15 Degree courses and 5 Diploma/Vocational courses) for the year 2009-2010. Mr. Jeet Singh, Audit & Accounts Officer of CTSA, Delhi attended the meeting on behalf of CTSA, Delhi. The Committee also awarded a total of 150 DoE scholarships to Tibetan students for undergraduate courses.

8. The Songtsen Scholarship Committee appointed by the DoE in its annual meeting on June 24, 2009 selected 10 eligible candidates for the Songtsen Scholarship for 2009. The committee also selected 10 candidates on waitlist.
