Kalon Tripa Inaugurate Mevon Tsuglag Peton School

Kalon Tripa Prof. Samdhong Rinpoche inaugurated the first model school, to be based on the new education policy, at Lower Dharamsala on October 10 at a brief ceremony attended by students, teachers and various dignitaries. Named Mevon Tsuglag Peton School by His Holiness the Dalai Lama after the three great Choegyals (dharmarajas) of Tibet, it has on roll 85 students from Montessori to Class II with 12 teachers led by Mr. Ngawang Thapke, the school headmaster. The school is under the supervision of Sambhota Tibetan Schools Administration (STSA).

Kalon Attend CTSA Founding Anniversary

The Central Tibetan Schools Administration (CTSA), Delhi established in 1961, celebrated its founding anniversary at the Central School for Tibetans (CST), Shimla on October 22-23. Mr. Thupten Lungrig, Kalon for Education of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) and CTSA Chairman Mr. Keshav Desiraju, Mr. SKBS Negi, Deputy Commissioner of Shimla and CTSA Director Dr. M.S. Verma were special dignitaries at the anniversary celebrations. Mr. Desiraju presented the annual CTSA Incentive Awards 2004 to Mr. Venkateshwarlu, Principal of CST Gurupura; Mr. Jigme Urgyen, trained graduate teacher at CST Darjeeling; Mr. P.S. Badhoria, physical education teacher at CST Dalhousie; and Mrs. Pema Wangmo, primary teacher at CST Darjeeling. The two 2004 national award recipients Mr. S.P. Sharma, Principal of CST Dholanji and Mr. Tashi Tsering Zongpa, post graduate teacher at CST Mungod were also honored at the occasion. Addressing the gathering, Mr. Desiraju emphasized the vital importance of modern education along side a firm grounding in Tibetan culture and language. The education Kalon spoke on the purpose of establishing separate schools for Tibetans in exile and on the new education policy. On the occasion, six new classrooms at CST Shimla were also inaugurated. In the evening, students from CSTs at Mussoorie, Shimla, Dalhousie, Herbertpur and Dholanji presented a colourful cultural show. On the second day, the students performed a march-past, calisthenics and presented an academic and cultural exhibition.

While in Shimla, the Kalon visited the Tibetan handicraft centre at Kasumpti and addressed the Tibetans gathered there on various policies of the Central Tibetan Administration.

South Zone Guidance & Counseling Cell Opened

The Department of Education, CTA opened a South Zone Guidance & Counseling Cell at the Doeguling Tibetan Settlement Office, Mundgod on October 17. Education Secretary Ven. Karma Gelek Yuthok in his inaugural address elaborated the role of the new cell to strengthen guidance and counseling to Tibetan students studying in schools and colleges in the south in making informed career choices as well as providing physical and emotional counseling. The function was attended by South Zone Chief Representative Mr. Thinlay Gyatso, Mundgod Representative Mr. Dhondup Dorjee, and school heads and teacher counselors of southern schools. DOE Additional Secretary Mr. Ngodup Dorjee and Education Officer Mr. Tsering Samdup were also present at the inauguration. Mr. Jamyang Wangyal has been posted as Resident Counselor of the Cell. While at Mundgod, Education Secretary visited the schools in the settlement and spoke to teachers and local residents on the new education policy.

School Exhibition

As a part of the celebrations on the 70th birth anniversary of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, a Middle School Level Exhibition on the life of His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama was organized by the Sambhota Tibetan Schools Administration, Dharamsala on October 25-26 at Central School for Tibetans, Paonta Sahib, H.P. The exhibition was inaugurated by Education Secretary Ven. Karma Gelek Yuthok. Students from STS Gangtok, Bhuntar, Chauntra, Dekyiling and Paonta took part in the exhibition.

School Inspection/Counseling

  • Education Officer Mr. Tsering Phuntsok visited Sambhota Tibetan Schools (STS) at Dekyiling (Dehradun), Paonta Sahib and Puruwala from October 30-November 7. He observed classroom teaching, cultural activities and inspected the educational facilities: science lab, language lab, school library and computer lab. He shared his observations during the staff meetings and offered suggestions on bringing all round improvement in the schools.
  • Education Officer Mr. Tsering Samdup and STSA Director Mr. Karma Chungdak conducted inspections of STS schools at Pokhriabong, Gangtok and Shillong from November 10 - 19. They did an overall assessment of the schools, interacted with the students, observed classroom teachings and offered suggestions for further improvement. They also visited Sonada school hostel run by the settlement office and interacted with students and the parents.
  • Mr. Jamyang Wangyal, South Zone Resident Counselor visited both the main and camp 6 school at Mundgod settlement from November 17-25 followed by visits to schools in Bylakuppe, Gurupura and Kollegal from December 13-24. While in the schools he conducted counseling sessions to students in study skills, self-understanding, awareness of post school career options, choosing an occupation and scholarships available. In addition, the counselor conducted individual and group sessions to students referred by the school teacher counselor and interacted with teachers.

Workshop for Teacher Counselors

Teacher Counselors from 12 Tibetan middle, secondary and senior secondary schools in the north attended a workshop organized by the Guidance & Counseling Cell of the Department of Education, CTA at the College of Higher Tibetan Studies, Sarah from October 3-7. Resource persons/experts in viz. career guidance, mental health, adolescence substance abuse and conflict resolution were invited to give talks to the participants during the workshop aimed at enriching the knowledge and skills of the teacher counselors to effectively carry out their role in the schools. Dr. Anupam Ahuja, a UNESCO consultant, used role-play method for understanding inclusive education practices and dealing with diversity; children with disabilities and actions teachers can take.

Workshop on Youth Leadership

Workshop on Youth Leadership was jointly organized by DoE and Tibetan Parliament and Policy Research Center, New Delhi at Dharamsala from Oct 1-9 for 60 university students from 15 colleges in India. The workshop aimed at grooming young Tibetan college students for future leadership role in the community. The participants were introduced to the structure and functioning of the various organs and departments of exile government and were taken on extensive field visits.

Inter-School Dialectic Contest

The first Inter-School Dialectic competition was held on October 28-29 at Tibetan Homes School in Mussoorie. Organised by Tibetan Homes Foundation (THF), as part of the 70th birthday celebration of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, sixty students from 15 Tibetan schools participated. The competition was for 2 categories viz. Class VII and VIII, with two students from each school for each category. Ven. Gyatso, Abbot of the Sakya College in Rajpur inaugurated the contest. Education Kalon Thupten Lungrig was the chief guest at the closing ceremony. Appreciating the initiative of THF for organizing such an event, he expressed his surprise at the outstanding performance given by the students. Sera Jey Secondary School from Bylakuppe bagged the 1st position in the grade VII category and 2nd position in the grade VIII category, Tibetan Children's Village, Suja, bagged the 1st position in grade VIII category and 2nd position in grade VII category, while the host school came third in both categories. The Kalon later separately addressed students and staff of THF & CST Mussoorie.

Tibetan Students Meet Peers across Globe Online

Seven students of Central School for Tibetans, Poanta Sahib participated in the Children's Dialogue online during the 7th Annual General Assembly of Children's United Parliament of the World (CUPW) held in Tunisia from November 15-17. CUPW had organized as a parallel event of the World Summit on the Information Society. Children from around the world participated in the event either as parliamentarians in the General Assembly in Tunisia or in the children's dialogue. The Tibetan students shared their ideas and views on child labour, human rights, democracy, climate change, terrorism and global warming. They raised issues that included the Panchen Lama, environmental destruction, violation of human rights etc. in Tibet. This dialogue was facilitated on the invitation by Ms. Laura Saikkonen, CUPW, Helsinki, Finland. It was, indeed, a novel experience for the children to share their thoughts with their counterparts across the world.

State Governor Visits Darjeeling School

His Excellency the Governor of the State of West Bengal Dr. Gopal Krishna Gandhi paid an unscheduled visit to CST Darjeeling on October 28 and observed the functioning of the school. He was deeply impressed with the overall performance of the school and in his letter to the Indian Human Resource Development Minister quoted that "The school is exemplary in every way in the student-teacher ratio, in student-teacher equation and quality of teaching aids, the cleanliness of the premises. It was a pleasure to visit the school." However, he expressed his concern on the need for strengthening guidance and counseling for preparing the students for post school life.

Winners of Annual Tibetan Essay Competition 2005

This year's annual Tibetan essay competition was held on September 23 for the students of Class VI to XII in schools in India & Nepal. The first three position holders in each class category will be awarded cash prizes and certificates. The collection of the best essays are published in Nyug-sar. Central School for Tibetans, CVP Bylakuppe

Central School for Tibetans, Cauvery Valley Project (CVP) at Bylakuppe was established in 1971 by Mysore Rehabilitation and Development Agency (MYRADA) as a primary school. Located about 60 km from Mysore city in Karnataka State, in picturesque and quite surroundings, the school caters to children of settlers residing at Dickyi Larsoe Tibetan Settlement. Later the school was taken over by CTSA, Delhi and made a branch of the main school CST Bylakuppe. In 1986, it was upgraded to middle level and made an independent school. It was further upgraded to secondary school level in 1990 and has classes I to X. The school has on roll 350 students and 32 teaching and non-teaching staff.

The school is affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education, Delhi and follows the syllabus prescribed by it. Over the years the school has constantly achieved good academic results in the board examinations achieving 84% results in 2005. Besides laying utmost emphasis on excellence in academics, the school stress equal importance on the all round development of students personality. The school's co-curricular activities calendar comprises games and sports, literary activities, music & dance etc. These activities are conducted inter-house for senior classes and intra-class for primary classes. The school also emphasis the preservation and promotion of Tibetan culture and inculcating positive values among the students through a series of initiatives including inviting eminent speakers and participation in various functions and festivals in the settlement. The school actively participates in various inter school cultural and sports competitions and students have distinguished themselves and brought many laurels to the school. The school has well equipped laboratories for junior science, mathematics, computer and social science along with a well developed resource centre and library.

Being a day school, it maintains a very close rapport with the community. The settlement office and parents representatives are actively involved in the welfare of the school. Mr. Jampa Tenzin is the Principal of the school.

Project News

  • Renovation and Refurbishment of BEP Model School :- The buildings and campus of the former Tibetan Handicraft Production Center at Gamroo village, Lower Dharamsala, which was handed over to this Department for setting up the first model school based on the new Basic Education Policy, was totally renovated and refurbished at a cost of Rs. 1,700,000 with financial assistance from Kiku and Hiroyuki Aoki, Japan; Telgar Ungdom School, Oslo, Norway; Tibet Fruende, Switzerland and Tibet House Trust-UK. The renovation work started in April 2005 and was completed in Oct. 2005. The furnishings and other costs of the model school were borne by SOIR-IM, Rajpur, India. We would like to deeply thank all donors for their generous assistance.
  • Project Monitoring Visit to Srinagar School:- The second phase of classroom construction project at the Tibetan Public School in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir was approved in July 2005 by the Department. Mr. Ngodup Dorjee, Additional Secretary, DOE visited the school between Dec 6-12 to monitor the progress of project and observe the management and academic environment of the school. He closely interacted with children, teachers and school management.
  • School Development Projects at STS Pokhraibong:- With financial assistance from Body & Balance, Austria, the school has completed renovation of the school buildings and classrooms; purchased new furniture and sports equipment; and conducted student educational excursion. We thank the donor for their continuous kind support.

Scholarship News

The Department of Education has made announcement for MBBS and Engineering Reserve Seats entrance test, Songtsen Scholarship and Research Studies Scholarship for the year 2006. Announcement has also been made for Fulbright Scholarship 2007. The application forms, procedures, rules and regulations of the respective scholarships are placed on our website and can be downloaded/ printed by interested and eligible Tibetan candidates.

Publications

Three books titled: Tibetan Hats, Inventions & Inventors, Samkyi sponsored by ARTIC, Japan were released on December 13 by the Deputy Director of ARTIC during his visit to Dharamsala. Another set of three books financed by SOIR-IM has gone to the press and will soon be distributed to all Tibetan schools.
