 YOU CAN HELP:

Sponsor a Child and
make a difference

Sponsoring a Tibetan refugee student provides food, tuition, uniforms, toiletries, and books.

The children who benefit from the sponsorship program are those deemed most needy by the local program are those deemed most needy by the local representative of the Tibetan exile govt. Following a careful screening of each child's background, sponsorship money is appropriated accordingly.

Generally, there is one sponsor per student; and each sponsor assists a selected child with a comprehensive education, extending through grade 12.

Communication with Students

Each sponsor will receive bi-annual academic reports on the progress of the student they have provided an education - along with a photograph of the child. If the sponsor wishes to personally communicate with the child through letters or email, the students who are able to write, enjoy doing so.

Communication provides each child an opportunity to practice English with an international friend. The children unable to write will draw pictures and send them to their sponsors.

The sponsorship section will answer any inquiries made regarding child's progress in school.

Cost of a Child's Education

Sponsoring the education of a Tibetan refugee child is only 30 US dollars a month (a yearly total of 360 US dollars). As soon as the Department of Education receives a sponsor's generous donation, an official receipt will be immediately mailed, along with a thank you letter, and if requested, more information about the children.

Hundreds of Refugee Children Need Your Assistance

In 1959, following Chinese invasion, over 85,000 Tibetans fled Tibet taking refuge in neighboring countries of India, Nepal and Bhutan. The refugee population has now reached around 130,000

Many of these families cannot afford the cost of schooling and often a young child is unable to begin an education until funding is available.

Living in exile, uneducated young adults struggle to find a job in a country they are not accustomed with. Without the skills and training needed, opportunities are scarce, and assimilation is difficult.

With education, there is hope; and through education, future generations of Tibetan children have a chance. You can help.

Education is Essential in Preparing Yound Minds for the Twenty First Century

There are about 27000 in the 82 Tibetan schools within the Tibetan refugee community - spread throughout India, Nepal and Bhutan.

In the remote settlements especially, we struggle to maintain appropriate classroom facilities and supplies. Due to our limited available funds, providing each refugee child with an education continues to prove a difficult task.

Within the community, there is also a continual influx of newly arriving families from Tibet. It is for these families, coupled with the present, that we must constantly expand upon and improve our classroom conditions.

Many Children Need a Sponsor

Being an exile government, we lack the necessary resources and therefore are unable to provide many of the standard items public schools typically receive despite generous assistance from the Government of India, and steadfast support from our sponsors.

These circumstances make it difficult for a child to learn and develop. We, at the DOE, are aiming toward long-term solutions to these problems, answers that will enable us to meet our goals:

  1. Providing our children with a modern education.
  2. Instilling in our children a pride in their culture and identity.
  3. Final, and most importantly, guiding our students in becoming good human beings motivated by a sense of universal responsibility.
